Check out this week’s photo tour of the Public Gardens to discover why ‘E Mari Merce” is the perfect motto for Haligonians.

Along the Gardens path...

Only the rose beds edged in begonias, and some of the annual containers by the Horticultural Hall Plaza still remain from the  summer plantings at the Gardens. However the weather is still mild, the fall light is beautiful and the Gardens will only be open for another 4 weeks. You only have to share the paths with the ducks!

Calling all families!!! Last week HRM launched the HRM Urban BioKit. This interactive booklet is a fun way to explore our urban and natural landscapes. It was developed by Environment Canada in cooperation with 19 local partners, including the Friends of the Public Gardens.

Environment Canada in collaboration with HRM and 19 community partners has just launched a new educational tool for HRM residents called the Halifax Regional Municipality Urban Biokit.

To download a copy of the HRM Urban Biokit, simply follow this link and print the brochure. Through its pages, participants can explore the sights, sounds and smells as well as the various species that can be found among the parks, streets and points of interest in HRM.

Check out this weeks photo tour… you can still stop, or at least smell the roses.

Along the Gardens path...

The Dahlia beds are gone, as are many of the tropical plants and annual beds. The gardeners are busy wiping the slate clean in preparation for next years displays.  The mood of the Gardens has changed, becoming more reflective and tranquil. Now is the time to look up and marvel at the many mature trees which out-date all of us, and imagine what they have witnessed through their lifetimes. Check out our latest photo tour, taken on a tempestuous Wednesday last week.

Along the Gardens path...

I always find that when I least want to do something I end up really enjoying it!
That was the case last Wednesday when I went to the Gardens on a very windy and wet day, hoping for a break in the weather so that I could take some photos.
Check the latest post of  ”Along the Gardens path…” (link to the right).
Remember that we update the photos every week until the Gardens close.
Enjoy!

Along the Gardens path… our weekly photo tour of the Gardens continues.

Those famous last words I uttered when I introduced this photo tour have come back to haunt me. The process of producing a photo tour is a little more complicated than I envisaged, especially for a perfectionist like me.

For the sake of better communication and a more pleasing presentation, all future photo tours of ‘Along the Gardens path…can be found by clicking the identical image to this one, which you will find on the home page of the Friends of the Public Gardens website, as well as on the upper right hand side of this Blog. Enjoy!

The First Day of Fall – Sunny and 22 Degrees!

Cornus kousa (Flowering Dogwood) has beautiful white or pink (and sometimes both) flowers in July , and raspberry- like upright berries in the fall.

The scroll beds by the Jubilee Fountain planted in deep pink Begonias.

Fountain at Horticultural Hall Plaza

The water looks inviting on this beautiful, warm and sunny day.

Found by the triangle at #11 of the Public Gardens map.... or by your nose.

For a Scentsational surprise take a stroll by this Katsura tree (one of 4). The smell of cotton candy brings back memories of your youth. It can be found at the triangle by #11 on the map.

A ‘hot ‘ bed which has generated a lot of interest this summer. The Lantana standard at the center draws a lot of attention but don’t get too close… it doesn’t smell as good as it looks.

Hard to decide which is the nicer display on this Sorbus aucuparia ( Mountain Ash Tree ), the white flowers in early summer or the bright orange berries in the fall.

Climbing Roses by the Jubilee Fountain with a Sorbus aucuparia (Mountain Ash) in the background.

At 114 years old it’s hard to still call her a nymph. This lovely lady and her cherubs , found on the Jubilee Fountain , are due for some major renovations in the near future as part of the Victoria Jubilee Campaign.

The deep purple leaves of this Colocasia (Elephant Ears) make a huge statement in this glorious annual container by the Horticultural Hall.

An oasis in the heart of the city. A perfect place to hang out, have a bite to eat, sip a coffee… The Uncommon Grounds cafe in Horticultural Hall. You can even do some retail therapy and buy a keepsake of the gardens.

The urn supporting this spectacular display is also slated for restoration. But no one can blame you if you didn’t notice!

The sun shining through the underside of these Colocasia (Elephant Ears) leaves reveals a magical surprise. Now you see, then you don’t .

Welcome to the Friends of the Public Gardens weekly photo tour.

The Ginkgo biloba is know as a living fossil (it was thought to be extinct for 1000 years) and is used as a health supplement for better memory retention. It will be the symbol of my blog so that we may remember that the Gardens have been resurected many times during it's 175 year history.

A little late in the season to start a weekly photo tour, but better late than never!

My name is Serena and I’m a new member to the board of the Friends of the Public Gardens. In fact I’m a new member to any board. As I arrived at  my first board meeting ever, I vowed to sit quietly and listen and learn.

Unfortunately I’m not known for being the quiet type and before the 90 minute meeting was over I had committed to posting a weekly photo tour of the gardens. As I’m  already at the Gardens every Wednesday conducting  free tours , I figured ” How onerous can this be?” Famous last words…

Once a week while the gardens are still open I will post a few photos of what’s blooming or what might be of interest in the gardens, so that people who can’t get out to see it for themselves can enjoy the gardens. It will also be a garden log of sorts so that we may compare bloom times from one year to the next.

I hope you enjoy the photos and comments and I’ll try to keep them brief.

Cheers,

Serena
